Snapchat officially revealed that it would now place adverts in the app’s main Chat tab, Sponsored Snaps. It has been testing this notion for a few months, but the initiative is now open to additional users.

These will seem like regular chats, but the company claims Sponsored Snaps are “visually distinct” from regular communications.

Snapchat claims that unopened advertising will gradually disappear from the tab. Once the message is opened, users can respond by text or click a link for more information.

Only 11 million of those users have enrolled on the company’s Snapchat+ membership scheme, so it must generate revenue in some way. We’ll have to wait and watch how obtrusive and obnoxious these Sponsored Snaps become.

This isn’t the only corporate lovefest going on at Snap HQ.

The business also revealed a new “feature” called Promoted Places, which highlights “sponsored locations on the Snap Map.” This campaign will begin with McDonald’s and Taco Bell because everyone knows that the most famous places in any city are two random fast-food businesses.
