X app, the popular social media platform, has announced the addition of two new subscription tiers to its offering, formerly known as Twitter Blue. These new tiers aim to provide users with enhanced features and benefits, while also generating additional revenue for the company.

The introduction of these subscription plans comes at a time when X’s advertising business is facing challenges, making the company increasingly reliant on subscription revenue.

The first new tier called the Premium tier, is priced at $16 per month. Subscribers to this tier will enjoy an ad-free experience in their following and “for you” timelines.

In addition to the removal of ads, Premium subscribers will also have access to the coveted blue checkmark and other existing perks available to subscribers.

X has also stated that Premium subscribers will receive a greater algorithmic boost in replies compared to subscribers of the lower-cost tier.

The second new tier, known as the Basic tier, is priced at $3 per month. While it offers a more affordable option for users, the Basic tier does not include the blue checkmark or revenue-sharing.

However, subscribers to this tier will still benefit from features such as tweet editing, longer posts, the ability to download videos, a small reply boost, and encrypted direct messages.

It is worth noting that both new tiers are currently only available via the web, with no mobile app support.

This strategic decision by X is likely aimed at avoiding additional fees associated with Apple and Google’s app stores. By offering the new tiers exclusively on the web, X can maximize its subscription revenue without incurring any additional costs.

The introduction of these new subscription tiers aligns with X’s recent efforts to expand its services and compete with other platforms.

CEO Elon Musk, who took over the company a year ago, has expressed his ambition to create an “everything app” that challenges the likes of YouTube and LinkedIn.

Reports suggest that Musk’s plans for X include new video streaming and job posting features, with potential forays into banking and other financial services.

Musk’s vision for X as a comprehensive platform extends beyond social media. He envisions a future where X can replace traditional bank accounts, offering users a complete suite of financial services.

This aligns with Musk’s tweet in July, where he stated, “In the months to come, we will add comprehensive communications and the ability to conduct your entire financial world.” Musk has emphasized the importance of obtaining users’ credit card information as a key first step in realizing this vision.

As X continues to evolve and expand its offerings, these new subscription tiers mark a significant step forward in providing users with a more personalized and enhanced experience.

Whether it’s an ad-free timeline or access to exclusive features, these tiers cater to the diverse needs and preferences of X’s user base.

With Musk’s ambitious plans and the company’s commitment to innovation, it will be interesting to see how X evolves in the coming years and whether it can truly disrupt the social media and financial services landscape.
