Motive and Electronic Arts have finally released a gameplay trailer for their long-awaited Dead Space remake. To some extent, the video depicts what you’d expect.

It’s a familiar retelling of Isaac Clarke’s terrifying mission to the mining ship USG Ishimura, but with much improved visuals and audio that make better use of modern hardware.

You’re still severing Necromorph limbs and floating through zero-gravity segments, but with more realistic, context-sensitive sounds and eerie volumetric lighting.

Thankfully, it isn’t a rehash. Isaac is no longer silent, as he was in the 2008 original, and there’s a better feel for a story involving a battle for sanity and the discovery of Isaac’s girlfriend Nicole’s fate.

To some extent, the remake is an opportunity to improve Dead Space rather than simply capitalize on its brand name.

Dead Space will be re-released on January 27th, 2023 for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S.

While it isn’t a completely new game, as fans may have hoped, this preview suggests Motive is at least delivering on what you’d expect from a remake: a modernization of graphics and gameplay while remaining true to the experience that drew people in the first time around.
