Twitter has announced that it is testing a new label that allows automated bots to self-identify as such in their labels.
The feature is intended to help people distinguish between human and automated accounts, while also providing “good bots with a way to increase their legitimacy and build trust and transparency with their audience,” according to the company.

The new feature appears to be an extension of Twitter’s last-year directive that high-quality bot accounts self-identify as such. It stated at the time that developers must “clearly indicate” if an account is a bot, as well as identify the person operating the account.
Twitter cited legitimate bot accounts as examples, including “bots that help you find vaccine appointments and disaster early warning systems,” according to a FAQ on its help site.
“When accounts send automated Tweets to share relevant information about the content on another account, automated labels help you differentiate between good bots and spammy bots and are all about transparency.”
The label will begin with 500-plus developer accounts and will be available to all developers “by the end of the year.”

It stated that while the label is not currently required, failing to use it would essentially be a violation of its updated developer policy, which requires the use of labels.
