PlayStation 2 Will Now Play Homebrew Games Using DVD Player Exploits

Game lovers are still finding it difficult to hack the PlayStation 2 if they want to run homebrew games without tweaking the hardware even though it has been around for many years now.

Usually what happen is that you will be required to install a modchip, and then buy a specially configured memory card or even pry the system open to block the disc reader’s sensors.

Most times it might just be a matter of using the discs themselves to fool the console. Security software engineer CTurt said it has developed a homebrew app method that exploits the DVD player function to run unofficial code.

This will work by corrupting the key functions in the files DVD movies always contain, and then loading a second, more advanced stage that isn’t constrained like the first ones.

The approach is not something that has been around, but it already works pretty well. To try it out, just put a disc in the PlayStation 2 drive and wait for it to load properly. It also possible to boot into a menu so you can choose from multiple games stored on a single disc.

CTurt also talked about an opportunities to allow unofficial games on other systems, as it  believes this could work for other PlayStation models. It’s not certain how long that will last when some PS5 models won’t include disc drives officially, but at least it gives hope for those wanting to expand their game collections with unofficial titles.

There wouldn’t have been a better time for this to come. Nice work making this possible.
