Google Enhances Security With Passkeys In Advanced Protection Program

Google is taking significant strides in fortifying the security of its Advanced Protection Program (APP) by adding passkey support.

Known as Google’s most robust security option, the APP is designed for individuals at high risk of cyber attacks, such as elected officials and human rights workers. Including passkeys aims to make this essential service more accessible to its target users.

Previously, the Advanced Protection Program necessitated a physical security key, which posed challenges for many users. In its latest announcement, Google recognized that the requirement for a physical component was a barrier for some high-risk individuals.

By incorporating passkeys, users now have the flexibility to choose between a physical key and a passkey, enhancing the program’s feasibility and convenience.

Google has been a pioneer in implementing passkey technology to bolster security. The company introduced passkeys to Android and Chrome in 2022 and extended the feature to all Google accounts in 2023.

This year alone, Google reported that over 400 million accounts have utilized passkeys more than 1 billion times. Despite this impressive figure, the overall adoption of passkeys has been gradual.

In addition to the passkey enhancement, Google is partnering with the media nonprofit Internews to offer cybersecurity support to journalists and human rights advocates.

This initiative will span ten countries, including Brazil, Mexico, and Poland, providing crucial protection to those most in need. This collaboration underscores Google’s ongoing commitment to advancing cybersecurity on a global scale.
