Sonic has done it once more. Sonic the Hedgehog 2 has set a new record for the domestic box office debut of a video game adaptation, with a $71 million debut, breaking the previous high watermark set by its predecessor in 2020.

The first film in what Paramount is now planning to expand into a cinematic universe grossed $57 million in its opening weekend.

Before the pandemic shut down theaters across the United States and other parts of the world, the first Sonic film grossed $319 million worldwide.

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is currently on track to outperform those figures, having earned approximately $141 million worldwide.

Timing appears to have been a significant factor in Sonic 2’s early success, as it was in the first film. Its main box office rival was Sony’s much-maligned Morbius, which saw a 74% drop in ticket sales from its opening weekend last Friday.
