Over the past week, Michigan State Police put a version of the 2021 Mustang Mach-E SUV through its paces, and the Ford Pro all-electric police pilot vehicle appears to have met the agency’s standards.

It’s the first EV to pass the Michigan State Police’s model year evaluation test, according to Ford.

The agency is one of two in the country that conducts annual evaluations of new model year police vehicles. It will publish the results of those tests for law enforcement agencies across the United States later this fall.
Michigan State Police evaluated the EV’s acceleration, top speed, high-speed pursuit, and braking capabilities, as well as emergency response handling.
The success of the pilot vehicle in the tests is a win for Ford. The automaker’s Police Interceptor program modifies vehicles for police use, typically by beefing up the suspension, brakes, and horsepower.

Ford intends to use the test results as a baseline as it considers producing “purpose-built electric police vehicles” as part of its pledge to invest $30 billion in EV technology. Meanwhile, Ann Arbor, Michigan, has ordered two of the EVs to be used as police cars.
