Niantic Labs, the firm behind Pokémon Go, said on Tuesday that it has acquired Scaniverse. The iOS 3D scanning app will remain available on the App Store, with all capabilities formerly included in the $17 annual subscription now included for free, according to inventor Keith Ito.

Furthermore, Niantic will continue to upgrade the program with new features in the future.

Niantic, like its other recent acquisition, appears to be hoping that Scaniverse will aid in its goal of creating a 3D map of the world. Ito will join the company’s augmented reality engineering team as part of the agreement.

“By combining Niantic’s dynamic mapping with Scaniverse’s LiDAR reconstruction, we intend to take 3D scanning to new heights,” he said.

Meanwhile, according to the company, “Scaniverse will make multi-OS scanning easier and more accessible to the Niantic Explorer community who contribute to this effort every day.”

It claims that this will enable it to create more immersive augmented reality experiences in Pokémon Go, Harry Potter: Wizards Unite, and future games.

Niantic Lab has not returned Ravzgadget request for comment on further detail of the transaction.
