Spotify, the popular music streaming platform, has recently expanded its subscription options to include an audiobook-only tier. This new offering, known as the Audiobooks Access Tier, is currently available exclusively in the United States.
For a monthly fee of $10, subscribers gain access to a vast library of over 200,000 audiobook titles, allowing them to enjoy up to 15 hours of listening per month.
It may initially appear peculiar for Spotify to introduce an audiobook-only tier at this price point, considering that their existing Premium subscription, priced at $11 per month, already includes 15 hours of audiobook listening along with other benefits.

However, it is important to note that audiobooks typically require a significant time investment, ranging from seven to eleven hours on average.
By offering a dedicated audiobook tier, Spotify is positioning itself as a more cost-effective alternative to competitors like Audible, a platform that charges $15 per month for one audiobook credit.
With Spotify’s Audiobooks Access Tier, subscribers can potentially listen to approximately two books per month for $5 less than what Audible offers.
Of course, this assumes that the listener prefers books of average length and does not exclusively gravitate towards lengthier tomes exceeding 1,000 pages. It is worth mentioning, however, that any unused listening time does not carry over to the following month.
Spotify’s decision to introduce an audiobook-only subscription tier can be attributed, in part, to the growing interest in audiobooks among its user base.
Since November, when Spotify began offering 15 hours of audiobook listening to its Premium subscribers at no additional cost, the platform has experienced a 45 percent increase in users on the free tier actively searching for and engaging with audiobook content daily.
Additionally, Spotify also sells audiobooks through its web player, further highlighting the company’s commitment to this burgeoning market.
