Uber has begun offering electric vehicles to customers in select areas of the Delhi-NCR region, with plans to expand its efforts in the coming months. Currently, the electric cabs are only available for pre-scheduled trips.

“As the leading mobility app in India, we are committed to supporting the Indian government’s emission goals.

Expect to see more electric vehicles — be they two, three or four-wheeled — across Indian cities in the coming months,”In response to a query, a spokeswoman said in an email to TechCrunch.

The company did not disclose how many EV cabs were operational on its platform in India, but it did state that it is collaborating with a number of fleet partners, OEMs, and charging infrastructure providers.“to gradually build the EV business in a sustainable manner.”

Uber’s move comes as India pushes ride-hailing companies to electrify large portions of their fleets over the next few years. According to Reuters, the Indian government ordered Uber and its archrival Ola to convert 5% of their fleet by 2022 and 40% by April 2026.

The push coincided with New Delhi’s pledge to reduce reliance on oil imports and reduce air pollution in order to meet its commitment to the 2015 Paris Climate Change Treaty.

The electric cabs are available through the app’s Reserve feature, which allows customers to select a pick-up time up to 30 days in advance.

According to the description on the website, users can cancel their scheduled trips 60 minutes before their trip for no charge.

Ola, which is backed by SoftBank, Temasek Holdings, Hyundai Motor, and Kia, also has a separate electric mobility unit that manufactures EVs. The company first entered the market with EV scooters and plans to expand that business to include an electric car in 2024.

Ola has also attempted to enter the Indian EV cab market. It launched “Mission: Electric” in 2018 to bring electric cabs, auto rickshaws, buses, rooftop solar installations, charging stations, and battery swapping experiments to the country.

In addition to Uber and Ola, Gujarat-based BluSmart Electric Mobility is vying for EV cabs in the South Asian market. The company, which raised $25 million from BP Ventures earlier this year and is aiming for $250 million, has an all-electric fleet, which distinguishes it from the existing two titans.

It also claims to have completed over 2.5 million all-electric trips and over 900,000 app downloads since its initial release in 2019. BluSmart’s current reach is limited to Delhi-NCR and Bengaluru.

Uber has been selling electric vehicles in the United States and Europe for some time. The company, headquartered in San Francisco, California, operates an Uber Green program to offer EVs on its fleet and aims to become a zero-emission platform by 2040. It has also set aside $800 million to encourage platform users to begin using EVs by 2025.
