Framework Is Selling Refurbished Versions Of Its Modular Laptops

Framework has always stated that it wants to sell PCs that compete with models such as the Surface Laptop or Dell XPS 13, and its latest 12th-generation Intel models are at least competitive in terms of specs.

Framework, a company that creates modular, easy-to-repair laptops with the goal of reducing e-waste, is now selling refurbished models.

They are based on “the small number of returns we receive from our 30-day return guarantee,” and they promise a like-new laptop with decent specs, a full guarantee, and a discount off all-new models. In addition, the company sells refurbished versions of its expansion packs (USB-C, USB-A, HDMI, etc.)

The returns are thoroughly tested, and any parts that fail to meet the company’s specifications are replaced.

They are then cleaned and tested to ensure functionality. There are “cosmetic limitations,” but Framework has set “pretty stringent” limits for the initial batch of refurbished laptops.

The cheapest refurbished model available costs $600 and includes an Intel Core i5-1135G7 processor but no memory, storage, WiFi, a power adapter, the operating system, or expansion cards.

In comparison, a new model of the same model costs $680. You’re looking at $905 for a decently equipped laptop that’s easy to repair and upgrade, with 16GB of DDR4-3200 RAM, 1TB of storage, WiFi, a power adapter, and a refurbished expansion card pack (2 USB-C, 1 USB-A, and 1 HDMI). Other options include a $800 Core i7-1165G7 model and a $1,069 Core i7-1185G7 model.

Allowing previously purchased devices to be sold is part of the company’s pledge to “remake consumer electronics to respect people and the planet,” while also allowing buyers to contribute to the circular economy.

So far, the refurbished program is only available in Canada and the United States; not enough returns have been received to launch the program in Europe.

Framework has always stated that it wants to sell PCs that compete with models such as the Surface Laptop or Dell XPS 13, and its latest 12th-generation Intel models are at least competitive in terms of specs.

So far, the company has provided mainboard updates that you can install yourself if you want more performance in the future. In any case, most buyers are likely to be equally interested in helping to reduce e-waste, and the refurbished models provide Framework with another avenue to do so.
