Garmin hasn’t updated its mid-tier Forerunner 200-series GPS running watches since 2019, but it’s about to catch up with a major update — as well as another for the most demanding athletes.
The Forerunner 255 is a follow-up to the 245 that includes full triathlon support, more accurate multi-band GPS, Garmin Pay, and race prep tools such as a multi-function widget and a “morning report” with sleep data and workout suggestions.

Garmin’s HRM-Pro and Running Dynamics Pod add-ons will also provide heart rate variability tracking and power stats.
Battery life is also good. In full smartwatch mode, you can expect up to 14 days of battery life and 30 hours in GPS mode.
The Forerunner 255 series is now available, with pricing determined by media support rather than case size. The 41mm Forerunner 255S and the larger, 46mm 255 start at $350 in the series.
If you want on-device music from Amazon, Deezer, or Spotify, the 255S Music or 255 Music will set you back $400. Those aren’t cheap, but if you’re serious about improving your running, they’re easier to justify.
However, you now have a stronger incentive to spend more money. Garmin is also releasing the Forerunner 955 Solar (shown in the middle), its first solar-powered running watch.
The in-glass panel allows for up to 20 days of smartwatch use and 49 hours of active GPS use, which is ideal for long-distance runners or anyone who dislikes plugging in. You’ll also get a touchscreen for when the five-button controls aren’t enough.
The 255 will also have multi-band GPS, heart rate variability, and software improvements, as well as ‘extras’ like music and Garmin Pay.

The 955 Solar is now available for $600, while a more traditional Forerunner 955 is available for $500.
You’ll probably already know if you want one, as you did with the previous 900 models. They’re aimed squarely at professional athletes and serious enthusiasts looking to improve their speed.
