In a bid to control cheating on the PC version of Destiny 2, Bungie said it’s making SMS verification mandatory for free-to-play gamers. Beginning today, if you want to take part in the game’s Trials of Osiris, Competitive Crucible, and Iron Banner player versus player modes as a F2P user, you’ll need to verify your account via SMS before you can start.

Users who try to join any of those modes will see the game prompting them to visit Bungie.net on their computer, sign into their account and enter the verification code Bungie sends to their phone. The move is aimed at stopping people from simply creating a new account after they’re banned for cheating.
SMS Validation is now live. All free-to-play PC players will now be required to verify their SMS prior to their participation in certain pinnacle level PvP activities.

Though the SMS verification is a once-off requirement which means that users won’t have to go through the steps every time they want to play Crucible, Trials or Iron Banner.
But if they have purchased one of the game’s expansions, like the recently released Beyond Light, they’ll have access to those Pinnacle activities with or without SMS verification enabled on your account.
With cross-play support on Bungie’s roadmap for 2021, there is pressure on the studio to address Destiny 2 cheating issues on PC. With a lot of instances of wall hacking and people using aimbots, PVP activities like Trials haven’t been fun on PC for months.

The good thing here is that similar measures in other games such as Call of Duty: Warzone have helped to limit cheating.
